In the Spring Term, Ruby class will continue to work on their reading at home. We hope to get the whole class in the 50 Night’s Read competition. We did very well in the Autumn Term, but we would like to get many more children reading daily at home. Remember, now that you are in Year 5 you don’t have to read to an adult every day.
Home learning is now given out on a Wednesday and is expected back on the following Monday. Please use Spelling Frame (www.spellingframe.co.uk) to practise your spellings in a fun way. Each child has been given their own log-in details to be able to access the website and specific spellings for each week.
Our topic this term will be focusing on World War II and the changes to Britain during this time. We will be focusing on the book ‘Goodnight Mr Tom’ in our English lessons and writing in many different styles. The book will also be used to help with reading comprehension. In maths we will be concentrating on fractions and the many ways we can manipulate them including: improper fractions, adding and subtracting fractions, finding fractions of amounts, equivalent fractions and multiplying and dividing fractions.
In science we are looking at animals including humans. The main learning will be about how blood flows, our pulse, chambers of the heart and arteries and veins. We will be representing these in many ways. Art lessons will focus on World War II, especially the Blitz skylines and airplanes of that time.
PE is still on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. All children are expected to have the correct kit, including a warm tracksuit for our outdoor lessons. In the first half term we will be working on circuit training and netball skills.
Our class assembly is on Wednesday 6th February at 2:45pm. We have many exciting lessons this term in Ruby Class and are looking forward to the build-up towards our residential trip to Finborough next term.
In Ruby class, we enjoy working as a team who support each other to strive for our best. We love learning new things and finding out answers to our own questions. Our teacher is Miss Martin and we are supported by Mrs Sumner (TA) and Mrs Cook (HLTA).
During the autumn term we are learning about evolution and inheritance and the Aztec, Inca and Mayan civilisations, we have already learnt so much! In PE we have been working on different gymnastics skills. However our favourite part of PE is playing tag rugby. Over the next half term we will learn a Mayan dance and practise our hockey skills. Our PE days are on Wednesday and Thursday.
We have loved being able to sketch different sculptures and then create a fossil sculpture of our own using clay. We really enjoyed being able to excavate them afterwards, just like an archaeologist. Next half term we will be making an Aztec Headdress using and improving our sewing skills.
In English we have been studying a book called Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman. We have been reading through the book and focusing on different types of texts in our writing. We have written diary entries, letters, a discussion text and story writing.
Our maths this term has focused mainly around number, understanding the value of the digits within the numbers, adding and subtracting them. Next half term we will also be focusing on multiplying and dividing numbers
