At Trinity Road Primary School we believe in providing our children with a curriculum which enables them to develop the skills and attributes needed for them to be respectful, resilient and confident individuals, as well as responsible citizens, who have a strong desire to learn. With this in mind we have developed our curriculum to meet the exact needs of our children and the surrounding community, whilst having a strong focus on excellence in all subject areas and basic skills.

Our curriculum coverage is based on the 2014 Primary National Curriculum and is planned through a theme. Wherever possible, and avoiding tenuous links, our curriculum map has been developed to ensure that there are learning links across all subjects, which can be taught through real life situations and outdoor learning experiences. We ensure, through planning, that our curriculum provides our children with an exciting, engaging and enriching learning experience, where all are confident to face any challenge they may come across and strive to achieve the high expectations that we have of them.

We use a two year rolling programme and you can find our curriculum maps, for each phase, by following the links below.

Please feel free to contact Mrs Burrells via the school office, should you wish to find out more about the Curriculum we are following.

ENGLISH

We wholly believe that encouraging and developing a love of reading is of great importance. Children who enjoy reading are more likely to achieve well in other curriculum areas. Children are encouraged to read at home as often as possible to support learning. A reading diary is provided to support communication between home and school about reading progress.

At Trinity Road Primary School, children participate in daily reading activities as part of the curriculum, this includes Shared Reading (children read to by the teacher), Guided Reading (the reading lesson with the teacher) and Independent Reading. Reading skills such as decoding unknown words and comprehensions are taught as part of the weekly guided session with the teacher and practised within the independent reading activities. The new curriculum places emphasis on ‘book talk’ (the ability to precis plots, find links with other reading, and discuss character’s feelings and motives) and these are also taught as part of the guided and shared reading sessions.

In order to support children’s reading development, the school uses levelled books in KS1 and these are colour banded. Once children have progresses through these levels, children are encouraged to select books from a ‘free reader’ selection which are graded for differing age ranges. In KS2 teachers use levelled guided reading books to track reading progress. Children progress to the next book band colour level when the teacher has assessed that the child is able to show fluency and accuracy at the current level and is able to demonstrate the required comprehension skills.

To enhance reading opportunities, the school is supplied with topic boxes from the school library service, this enables the school to expand the range of non-fiction books available to children.

WRITING

At Trinity Road the teaching and learning of writing is supported by the ‘Talk 4 Writing’ approach.

‘Talk 4 Writing’ was developed by a man called Pie Corbett. It is based on the principles of how children learn. It enables children to imitate the language they need for a particular topic or genre orally before writing their own version.

At Trinity Road, English units are taught in 2 to 3 week blocks. The first week is referred to as the ‘imitation’ week. This is where activities are planned to enable the children to internalise the pattern of the language required for the genre they are learning to write. An example text is used and supported visually by a text map and actions to help the children recall the story or non-fiction text.

The second week is referred to as the ‘innovation’ week. This includes activities to support children in making changes to the pattern of the learnt text through shared writing. Revising the features of the genre they are learning about and building a ‘writers toolkit’.

The final part of a unit is called the ‘invention’. The children invent their own written piece in the genre they have been learning about and including the appropriate features, using their knowledge of the ‘toolkit’ from the previous weeks.

Writing is also developed across the curriculum, where children have the opportunity to practice the skills they have learned in their English lessons in other curriculum areas.

Handwriting is taught once a week and the children are awarded with a ‘Special pencil licence’ in KS1 and a ‘Pen licence’ in KS2 when their handwriting is consistently neat and correctly formed in their learning across the curriculum.

KS2 have a grammar session three times a week and the whole school are given spellings to learn and are tested on these weekly.

MATHS

At Trinity road, we believe that maths builds essential life skills and all opportunities to develop these should be taken in discrete maths lessons, as well as throughout the rest of the curriculum.

All maths learning objectives at Trinity Road are taken from the current national curriculum. The whole school follows a yearly plan that is broken down into topics to ensure that all aspects of the curriculum are covered. Please see the document below to view the overview of topics for your child’s year group.

We use a practical approach to the teaching and learning of maths based on the CPA approach to learning (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract). Please see the document below to find out more about the CPA approach. In daily lessons, all children attempt a main challenge in line with expectations for their year group and then move to deepening their understanding with a greater depth challenge. Some children may also move on to an ultimate challenge to extend them further.   Problem solving, reasoning and explaining are also key to our approach to developing mathematicians and we are always looking for new and exciting ways to explore this aspect of maths.

Basic skills such as knowing number bonds and times tables are important. Children’s progress in learning their times tables and related division facts follows the National expectations for each year group. Please see the document below for ways to support your child at home with the relevant times tables and basic skills resources for their year group.

Maths workshops were held during the Autumn term 2016 which were well attended and gave lots of positive feedback about this approach.

SCIENCE

Science at Trinity Road is taught following the programmes of study outlined in the 2014 Primary National Curriculum. Our Science curriculum is taught over a two year rolling programme which allows each of the themes to be covered in detail.

Our children are encouraged to ask questions and learn about Science topics in a variety of ways, including practical experiments, visits and by carrying out their own independent research using both books and ICT in order to broaden their understanding of the both the natural and man-made world around them.

We are also fortunate to have the Trinity Road Woodland which many children helped to set up. It enables them to explore topics like habitats and environments first hand, in a safe natural environment.

HISTORY

Our curriculum encourages pupils to gain knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world, focusing on how Britain has influenced and been influenced by other countries. We continue to immerse the pupils in their local history as well as studying the wider world and ancient civilisations. Pupils develop an awareness of the past through artefacts and a range of sources and study events chronologically to develop understanding of timelines and time passed. We use a cross curricular approach in the deliverance of history to develop children’s sense of awe and wonder. Children will compare and note contrasts and trends over periods of time.

GEOGRAPHY

At Trinity Road, we value the many skills taught in Geography. A high quality geography education should inspire a curiosity and fascination in our pupils about the world and its people. The teaching should equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with an understanding of the Earth`s key physical and human processes.

We aim to develop the pupil’s knowledge and understanding of the location of significant places, both land and sea. For them to understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features. We aim to ensure that the children are competent in the geographical skills needed to collect, analyse and communicate a range of data gathered through fieldwork. That they are able to interpret information collected from maps, globes, diagrams and photos, and can then communicate their findings in variety of ways.

Curriculum 2014 is covered across in each year group across a two year rolling programme.

RE

At Trinity Road, we are committed to respect for all and believe that learning about and from religions will build respect. By learning about different religions, we aim to develop respect and understanding of the faith background of all.

We believe that RE supports and strengthens our aims in every aspect of school life and our caring ethos and the value that we place on the development of the whole person, spiritually, morally, socially, culturally and intellectually is reflected in the RE curriculum.

We aim for the pupils to acquire and develop knowledge an understanding of the principal world faiths practised in Great Britain.

RE is not a nationally determined subject; we use the Essex Agreed Syllabus of Religious Education as the basis for our planning and delivery of lessons.

Parents have the right to withdraw their children from RE by consultation with the Head teacher.

Curriculum 2014 is covered across in each year group across a two year rolling programme.

MUSIC

At Trinity Road Primary School we value the creativity and skills developed through music. We encourage a quality of music education which engages and inspires pupils and develops a love of music. It promotes their talents as musicians, and increases their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. The teaching of music is planned to ensure a broad and progressive learning journey. As pupils progress, they develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose and listen with discrimination.

In line with the National Curriculum programmes of study for music, at Trinity Road we ensure that all pupils engage in performing, composing, listening and appraising music. We provide opportunities for performing, listening to, reviewing and evaluating music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of great composers and musicians. The children learn to sing and use their voices to create and compose. They have the opportunity to explore musical instruments and use technology appropriately. Exploring and understanding how music is created is experienced through seven elements of music that are interwoven throughout the year.

COMPUTING

The computing curriculum at Trinity Road Primary school meets the objectives outlined in the National Curriculum for Computing in Key Stages One and Two and ICT objectives in the Foundation Stage Profile.

The new curriculum covers three aspects of computing: Computer science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy. We aim to equip our children with the skills needed for their future in the digital world and teach these skills through our new online learning platform, DB Primary, where children get to practise using every skill first hand through a range of activities.

Alongside this, E-Safety is embedded into school life through regular lessons, assemblies, displays and class discussions.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

At Trinity Road School, we encourage children to excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We aim to embed, within our PE curriculum, values such as fairness and respect. In our lessons, we want pupils to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness. During each week, each child receives two hours of PE teaching with additional opportunities to take part in out of school activities such as football, basketball and karate.

The school works closely with the Chelmsford Sports Partnership, which gives opportunities for children to participate in inter school activity and competition.  Additionally, we have links with outside providers for activities such as golf, karate and basketball in order to further enrich the children’s’ experiences.

PERSONAL SOCIAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION

Through our P.S.H.E curriculum, we encourage every child to be reflective about their own beliefs, religious or otherwise, and show respect for different people’s faiths, feelings and values. Our curriculum promotes clear messages about the impact of bullying and prejudiced behaviour on pupils’ wellbeing. Across the curriculum, children have opportunities to engage with the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs; they develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain. Our curriculum enables pupils to have the ability to recognise the difference between right and wrong and to readily apply this understanding in their own lives.
