Art

Intent

At Trinity Road, we aim to provide children with an inspiring, rich and vibrant art curriculum that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and emotional expression in our pupils. We strive to equip our students with fundamental art techniques across various mediums, including drawing, painting, sculpture and digital art. We want pupils to appreciate the historical and cultural significance of art. This includes exploring works from diverse cultures, eras, and artists, thereby fostering a sense of global citizenship and respect for inclusivity. We believe that art is a vehicle for self-expression. Our intent is to give children the confidence to express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas through visual arts, promoting individuality and emotional development. We encourage pupils to analyse and critique their own work and the work of others. This reflective practice helps to nurture resilience and a growth mindset, essential skills for lifelong learning.

Implementation

Our art curriculum is structured around the National Curriculum while still providing scope for creativity. We use a spiral approach, revisiting and building upon key concepts each year to deepen pupils’ understanding and refine their skills.

Over the course of each year the children will look at different artistic skills including drawing, painting, printing and sculpting. Children will develop their understanding of the use of tone, colour, line and texture alongside broadening their knowledge of different artistic styles and genres. Children will develop their abilities to critique artwork, express their ideas and opinions using artistic vocabulary and represent their own views through a broad plethora of artistic styles.

Impact

The impact of our Art curriculum is evident in the progress and achievements of our pupils. Through regular monitoring, assessment and evaluation, we ensure that every child makes excellent progress from their individual starting points.

Pupils demonstrate significant progress in artistic skills, with many achieving a high level of competency by the end of Year 6. This is reflected in their sketchbooks, which showcase a variety of artworks and techniques. Pupils exhibit a keen understanding of diverse artistic traditions and practices. They can articulate their thoughts about famous artists and make connections between their work and wider cultural contexts.
